What you actually need to cook at a campsite

Outdoor cooking in India needs three things: a burner, fuel that is easy to buy, and a reliable way to light it. Everything on this page runs on the same standard cassette-type butane can — the long flat can sold in most Indian hardware and kirana shops — so you are never hunting for a fuel type that nobody stocks.

That single fuel choice matters more than it sounds. Threaded EN417 screw-on canisters, the kind sold for imported trekking stoves, are hard to find outside a few city outdoor shops and cost far more per gram. Cassette cans are the practical Indian standard, and every ZORACook stove and torch takes them.

How much fuel to pack

One 225g can gives roughly 2–2.5 hours of cooking on a medium flame — less on high, considerably more on a low simmer. As a rough rule for two people cooking two proper meals a day, budget about one can per day and carry one spare. A weekend for two is comfortably covered by three cans.

Lighting it

The full-size stove has a built-in igniter; the mini stove does not. Carry a lighter either way, because igniters fail when damp. The Arc BBQ Lighter (₹189) is flameless and windproof, which is the right tool on an exposed campsite — but it needs a USB charge, so on a multi-day trek the Premium Steel Gas Lighter (₹149) is the safer bet: no battery, no fuel, rated for 10,000+ sparks.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need for a first camping cookout?
A stove, at least two butane cans and a lighter. The cheapest complete setup is the mini stove with 2 cans at ₹549 plus a ₹149 steel lighter.

Can I take butane cans on a train or flight?
No. Butane canisters are pressurised flammable goods — not permitted in checked or cabin baggage on flights, and restricted on trains. Carry the stove and buy fuel at your destination.

Does butane work in the mountains?
It weakens below about 5°C because butane stops vaporising readily. Fine for most Indian conditions and for hill stations in summer, but for winter or high-altitude trips keep the can warm inside your jacket before use.

Is it safe to cook inside a tent?
No. Butane burning in an enclosed space consumes oxygen and can produce carbon monoxide. Cook outside, or in a well-ventilated space with real airflow — never in a zipped tent or a closed car.

Do the stoves come with gas?
No, stoves ship without fuel for safe transport. Either add cans separately or buy a combo, which includes them and costs less.
