How do you solder a copper joint with a butane torch?
Work clean, heat the fitting (not the solder), and let the hot copper melt the solder. The basic steps:
- Clean the pipe end and the inside of the fitting with emery cloth or a fitting brush until bright.
- Apply a thin, even layer of water-soluble plumbing flux to both surfaces and push the joint together with a twist. Thin matters — excess flux does not help the solder flow and the residue left inside the pipe is mildly corrosive, so wipe the outside once the joint has cooled and flush the line before use.
- Heat the fitting evenly, moving the flame around it — not the solder wire, and not the pipe. Watch the flux: it bubbles, then goes clear and glassy. That is the joint telling you it is ready, and it is a far better signal than counting seconds.

- A dirty or unfluxed joint. Oxidised copper will not wet, no matter how hot it gets. If solder beads up and rolls off instead of being drawn in, the surface is the problem, not the heat — stop, cool it, clean back to bright metal and re-flux.
